Sick of Celiac?

Did you know that one in every 133 Canadian citizens have Celiac disease?

Celiac disease is a malady of the autoimmune system that is provoked by the consumption of gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and kamut and can also be found in other products such as lip balm and some vitamins and medications.

Victims of celiac disease suffer inflammation of the inner lining of the small intestines. The damage done in the intestines causes great difficulty for the body to absorb key vitamins and nutrients like Vitamin D, iron and protein and calcium.

While right now there is no cure for celiac disease other than simply avoiding gluten entirely, studies are being done to create an injectable drug that will slowly expose the immune system to the three main components of celiac disease. The hopes are that this regular injection would make the body slowly get used to these three fragments and in time, the body will be able to take in gluten without negative reaction.
